| Brendon McCullum: 'We would've loved to have won the toss. The first session was certainly challenging. At the end of the day, the position we are in is outstanding. Sets us up nicely for tomorrow. Never felt you were in on this wicket, Kane is so mature for such a young player, he was outstanding and took all pressure off me. 3/30, you can't go out and go all guns blazing, got to suck it up for the team and managed to build a partnership with Kane which in the end made it a pretty good day for us.' | |
| McCullum took his time intially and then started to get going nicely while Williamson was free flowing throughout his knock. The former got to his hundred in style by smashing Jadeja way over long-off and soon after, Williamson too completed his hundred. A little while later, Zaheer broke the 221-run stand as Williamson was unlucky to be caught down the leg side as he got a faint edge through to Dhoni. Anderson then joined McCullum at the crease and the duo have added 78 for the 5th wicket and are looking very solid. | |
| New
Zealand have scored 150 runs in 39 overs this session and that tells the
story. Having won the toss and opted to field, India owned the morning
session by taking three quick wickets but hundreds from Williamson and
skipper McCullum swung the momentum back in New Zealand's favour. At
30/3 in the 18th over, India would have fancied their chances to bowl
the hosts out today, but they have only themselves to blame. Williamson
offered a nick to first slip but Vijay didn't grab it and since then,
there was no looking back for New Zealand. Brendon McCullum shaved off his beard to try to change his luck, but lost the crucial toss again. Put in on a testing wicket, he joined Kane Williamson at 30 for 3, and the two took it away from India with a 221-run stand in 51 overs. The shaving of the beard seems to have worked then. "A toss we would have loved to have won," McCullum says. "The first session was certainly challenging. 'Try and get through,' we said to each other. Funny wicket. You never felt in even until the last two balls. So mature for a young guy, Kane has had a great summer as well. Situation today with the wicket the way it was, 3 for 30, you can't go out and go blazing. The partnership with Kane made it a great day for us."
India have fielded and bowled poorly, but don't take away from what has
been an exceptional comeback full of intent. McCullum has the look of a
man who will be hungry for ore when he bats tomorrow. See you tomorrow,
then
